Big Question: Would local farms be able to yield the same amount of product, meat or produce, to support the demand that bigger farms and corporations are currently supplying?
My Answer:
As we were created this project all I could think of is how I could change the way I eat to become more healthier and to support local farms. I look at how I have eaten prior to this research and see that running to the grocery store is much easier and more convenient. Through the research my group has done we found out that money, convenience, and knowledge play a huge role into where people chose to buy their food. People are not looking at the labels when purchasing food they are looking at the price tag. I have already seen Food Inc prior to class so watching it a second time made me more knowledgable and remember what I watched. I really wanted to go home and go through the food that was in my house. I rarely eat meat because I hate the taste and the look of it so I felt better about my self when watching Food Inc.
When viewing Food Inc and doing research the main concern of the food industries and local farms was the "need" of the food right now. If people ate the amount of food we should be eating and not over indulging maybe local farms would have a chance to be the main source but unfortunately right not local farms can't provide the people the food they want.
The answer to the big question, Would local farms be able to yield the same amount of product, meat or produce, to support the demand that bigger farms and corporations are currently supplying?, I feel that right now its not possible but who knows. I hope that local farms can produce the vast majority but it seems to be unlikely due to the "want of the people. The big industries seem to be taking over because they can provide bigger quantities and faster production of food to the people. I know that this project and watching Food Inc will play a role now in my eating habits. I want to join a CSA during the summer and become active in the local farms in my area. I really want to try to convert to organic food. The decision of the future of food is in the consumers. If consumers want cheap fast food they will continue to go to McDonalds but if they want a healthier more tasteful meal they will go take a trip to their local farms. It's really in the hands of the people and if they become well educated and knowledgable of what they are eating. People will hopefully start helping local farms in their communities and take part of what they are eating.
