Reflection
When I first started taking Writing, Research, and Technology course, I was a little nervous because of what was going to be required from me. I am very hard on myself when it comes to my writing and I am not updated on my technology. The technology aspect really made me nervous because I'm not big on blogging, I don't own a Facebook, and really don't use that much different technology in my writing. After taking this course, I feel much better and realized how much my own writing as grown and how I have grown in my technology. This course as opened up my eyes to new things and expanded my knowledge in Writing, Research and Technology.
Writing:
Having a dual major in Writing Arts has helped me improve my skills in my writing. This course as shown me what writing really is and made me have a different outlook on writing. For being a Writing Arts major, I'm one who is hestitant about my writing and doubtful. I don't think my writing is that good but taking this class has changed my impression on writing as a whole. I was introduced to many new genres. The project, Twitterive, I completed in this course was a great way of using different genres. Twitterive was probably my favorite piece of writing I was introduced to. I learned new things and tried new writing genres that was out of my comfort zone. Twitterive was a way to express myself and emotions in the story I was telling through different genres. I told a story that was very personal that dealt with my twin sister's heroin addiction. I was very nervous presenting my Twitterive in front of the class but in the end it really help me develop my Twitterive of what it is today. Not only is this project personal, it is a great way to share my sister's addiction and to see that she overcame it. The Collaborative Research project was very intersting and allowed me to write in different genres as well and create a piece of work with others. I learned how to work collaboratively within this project and gain knowledge from others. This project was all about research and hard work. I was able to learn a lot about local and industrial farming through this project and represent it in a different way. Through all of these writing projects I was able to demonstrate my ability in different genres and to adapt to new styles of writing.
Blogging was introduced to me in this course. I wasn't too positive about blogging because I didn't like how others would be abel to read what I wrote and comment on it. I have a hard time explaining what I mean through my words and having someone read it made me feel less confident in my writing. However, after gaining some feedback from others, I came to enjoy blogging. Through blogging, I was able to reflect on assignments, class, and class readings. I was also able to receive information from others when they posted a comment which later helped me in my projects I completed. Tweeting was another thing I was hesitant about. I have tweeted for other classes but I was concern with the character limit, what to tweet about, and when to tweet. Even though I struggled at times with my tweet, I had a better connections with students in my course and was able to conversate with others about writing pieces I was constructed. I learned that tweeting was a form of writing and it helped me comunicate with others in a way I thought I would never enjoy. I still have the same feeling of tweeting which is " Why would anyone care what I am eating at 8:00 in the morning."
Everything for this course was done through technology which I'm not use to. I am used to having hard copies of my writing and revising with a pen. I revised my website a lot which will still be a continuing project of mine. I would receive feedback from the professor and other students in the class that helepdme see different aspect of my website. I didn't think I would revise as much as I did. Writing is a process and I learned that through this course. My Twitterive had been through many drafts and everytime I add or take something away really helps show the meaning of my Twitterive.
Research:
For each project that was constructed, we had to do some type of research. When implementing my Twitterive, I didn't think I needed to do much research since it was a personal story. However, I needed to do research on those past expereinces and reflect on them. It wasn't research through a computer but it was research through memories and past experiences. The oral history and collaborative project showed me how much research was needed. I wasn't knowledgable of the content or the topic we were going to be working with, so I had to do much research on the computer, through local farms round the area, and finding someone to interview that was knowledgable of local farms and industriall farms.
Through the oral history and collaborative project , I have learned that research isn't as easy as 1,2,3 or typing topics into Google. We needed to go further into the research, I had called numerous local farms, read many articles and websites about different farms, and look up several videos. Once we were able to find someone to interview , we needed to prepare ourselves with questions to ask. We needed to make sure with our questions that they stayed within our topic. Through all the research we did for our Oral History and Collaborative Project, it helped me gain more knowledgable of my topic and a better conections with it as well. When placing everything on my website, I thought it was going to be easy but then I learned it wasn't as easy. I had to do research on uploading documents, pictures, and videos onto my web page. I learned many different applications for my website through research. Research has allowed me to learn new things and gain a better connections with my projects.
All the reseach I conducted for this semester by myself or with my groups made me realize that research is much more invovled than 1,2,3 or simply typing in a topic in Google. To really get the information we needed to do thorough research and go to many different sources to receive helpful and appropriate information. The information we gained to help construct our Oral History and Collaborative Project made our project better because we understood what we were talking about and I was able to value our projects more because of what went into it.
Technology:
I would definitely have to say that this course has greatly impacted my knowledge and experience with technology. Before this class, I wasn't as technology literate as others but now I can say I have learned so much about technology. First thing I learned about technology that it is a great way to communicate with others. I never though through Twitter and blogging, I would gain anything but it helped me create some of my writing pieces and helped me understand some of what we were learning in the course. I also learned that technology can also be very frustrating due to us thinking that it will always work out. I have struggled a tremendous amount with my website due to technology difficulties. We depend on technology so much and I thought I didn't but after this class I realized that I do.
This course opened me up to learning so many new things. One thing I learned was how to create a moviemaker for my Twitterive. I struggled in teh beginning but the outcome was wonderful. I learned how to add pictures and music to go along with my video which helped me express the meaning of my twitterive. Second thing I learned, was how to upload a Youtube video. The Youtube video was very difficult because I needed to format it to the right data file. I spent many hours trying to figure out how to do this Youtube crap and it took me a long time but in the end it was so worth my time! After hardwork and research, I was able to upload Youtube videos for my projects. By creating a movie maker and uploading Youtube videos helped me portray my message out clearer in my writing.
Weebly, was new to me and I struggled in the beginning because I wasn't sure how to create the different writing pieces or upload a video or music. Once I spent time and gained knowledge from classmates and my professor the technology came a lot easier.I love my website page and will continue to use it. I used Twitter in one of my other courses and wasn't to fond of it. I didn't know what to write but once I got the hang of it, it wasn't too bad. I aleady new how to tweet so that went a lot smoother than other technologies I used. Blogging was new to me this semester but I really enjoyes it. The only problem I had with blogging was formatting my page. Everytime I wrote something and published my page, the format would come out all weird. Editing played a huge role in my blogging. For my Oral History project, I was introduced to videotaping a Skype. I already use Skype to communicate with my sister from California so that came easy to me. However, learning how to videotape a conversation on Skype was really neat. By learning how to video tape a conversation on Skype allowed my group to create our Oral History project. We had a hard time finding a local farm that would speak with us so our next options was a friend of a group member. The friend was away at school so we had to learn how to construct a video call on Sykpe along with taping it.
One of the main things I learned was how to link things onto my page. I thought this was so enat that I could link a different web page to my page or a video. I just recently learned how to link, so throughout my Weebly you'll notice you can go to my group members page from mine. This course has really opened up my eyes to many different new technologies that I thuoght I would never use. Weebly, I feel that I will continue to use because it's a great source of information about myself that can further help me when interviewing for jobs. I can show my portfolio to employees and it shows my ability in technology.
This course has impacted my knowledge with Technology so much and will be a great benefit to myself when I become a future teacher. I loved working with the many new technologies I was introduced: Twitter, Weebly, YouTube, Moviemaker, and Blogging. From this course, I enhanced my ability and comfort zone with technology. I don't think I am a genius on technology but have improved a lot in my technology skills. I am honestly proud of myself that I was able to construct many things in this course through technology. I am also proud that I expanded my writing ability and wrote in various genres. I was open to more genres of writing and learned how each plays a role when writing. Each of these projects I gave 100% of my hard work and dedication to. I am glad of my writing now. I gained new knowledge, confidence, and a sense of respect for writing that I didn't have prior to taking this course. I learned that writing takes time and that many revisions is part of that. Prior to this course I said I was just an educator but not I believe that I am an educator and a writer!
After taking Writing, Research, and Technology, I have improved my writing ability and gained new knoweldge that I thought I could never construct. I also gained more confidence in myself when it comes to writing. I have overcame many of my fears and struggles in writing, research, and technology. Anything is possible from hardwork and dedication and through this course I feel that I demonstrated that and learned that I can do it!
